We couldn’t have had asked for a better day. The bus left the club carpark promptly at 8:30. Upon arrival at Puckapunyal, we were met by SGT Jimmy Mathews who was to be our guide and co-organiser for the day.

   There was a range of vehicles on display for us to look and sit in. Vehicle such as the M1A1, AS4, M88 recovery, 45M, G-wagon and 40M. SGT Mathews then took us on a tour of the maintenance bays and the driver and servicing wing. Unfortunately, the tank simulation wasn’t working but we were able to have a look at it anyway.

   After leaving the military base, we proceeded to Seymour for lunch at the Royal Hotel. The food was yummy and some of us enjoyed our meal in the beer garden. We walked around the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk after lunch before getting back on the bus to head home.

   A big thank you to SGT Mathews and his team for giving up their time and putting on an awesome display. To Wes for booking the bus and to the RSL for providing the funds needed.

The role of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps (RAAC) is to locate, identify, capture or destroy the enemy using fire and manoeuvre.

The Royal Australian Armoured Corps is a combat arm that is able to participate in a range of operations including direct attack, reconnaissance and armoured mobility to infantry.

Units of the RAAC are equipped with the Abrams M1A1 main battle tank (MBT) family of vehicles or the Australian Light Armoured Vehicle (ASLAV) and Bushmaster protected mobility vehicle (PMV). 

The main types of Armoured Corps units are: 

• The tank regiment operates the Abrams main battle tank.
• The cavalry regiments operate the ASLAV and Bushmaster protected mobility vehicle.
• The light cavalry regiments are Army Reserve units equipped with either the light cavalry patrol vehicle (LCPV) and the interim infantry mobility vehicle (IIMV), or the Bushmaster (PMV).
